According to the latest results from Gallup’s daily tracking poll, conducted Sunday through Thursday, 30% registered Republicans said they would back Romney, while 37% say the same thing earlier in the week.
Meanwhile, Newt Gingrich showed mild surges during the week, jumping from 14% on Monday 20% on Friday.
The poll was carried out almost entirely before the CNN/South Republican Presidential Debate Thursday night.
Fluctuation margins between the poll shows Romney and Gingrich narrowed from 22 points earlier in the week to 10 points on Friday, just one day before the South Carolina primary.
The latest survey also conducted almost entirely before Gingrich’s ex-wife took part in a controversial interview that aired Thursday night on ABC News
